About Dhurandhar
Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar follows the story of an Indian spy named Hamza who infiltrates deep into Pakistan to join Rehman’s gang of dacoits. The film is inspired by real-life events, starting from the 2001 Parliament attack and the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, giving the audience an insight into the Indo-Pakistan conflict.
Apart from Ranveer Singh, the film also stars Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt, Rakesh Bedi, and Sara Arjun. The second part of the film will hit the theaters on March 19 next year.
Upcoming competition with ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ and ‘Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri’
‘Dhurandhar’ is enjoying a fairly uncontested success at the box office this week. However, the release scenario is set to change with James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: Fire and Ashes’ hitting the theaters next week, followed by Kartik Aaryan’s ‘Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri’ during the Christmas week, both of which are expected to win over the ‘Dhurandhar’ screens. However, it remains to be seen whether the film will be able to maintain its hold and do business for a long time throughout the holiday week.
Is Akhand 2 a competition for Dhurandhar?
Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Akhand 2 was postponed just hours before its scheduled release on December 5 and will hit the theaters on December 12.
Sharing his thoughts on the South Indian film, trade expert Sreedhar Pillai said that Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar is doing very well in Chennai. He said that no Hindi film has received such a response in a long time. Without any direct opposition, the second week will continue its excellent streak.
Regarding the release of “Akhanda 2,” he said, “It is a Telugu film, and Akhanda 2 will be more of a rival to the re-release of Rajinikanth’s ‘Padayappa.'” But I think Dhurandhar has its own audience, and Hindi cinema also has its own audience. Of course, Tamil cinema is number one in Chennai city, but Dhurandhar also has its own audience. You should remember that the run time of 3 hours and 34 minutes was not well received in the beginning. But now I think people have gotten used to it.”
Taran Adarsh further said, “Of course, for the South audience, for the Telugu audience, Balakrishna is huge. It is going to be a great start, but Dhurandhar will hold its ground for the Hindi audience as well.”
On Dhurandhar Not Releasing in Gulf Countries
Taran Adarsh wonders if the non-release of ‘Dhurandhar’ in Gulf countries is a big setback for the film.
He said, “I’m not denying that the revenue is being lost, but the film is doing so well everywhere that they might be suffering. If this film had been released then, it would have been great; it would have only increased the revenue.”
How Soon will Dhurandhar Recover its Budget?
Taran Adarsh revealed that Dhurandhar was made on a budget of Rs 300 crore, including both parts. The post-credits of the first part surprised the audience by announcing the release date of Dhurandhar Part 2, which will hit the screens on March 19, 2026.
Dhurandhar crossed Rs 200 crore in its first week, which is more than half of the total budget of both parts.
Social Media Frenzy and Controversy Surrounding Dhurandhar
Both Sreedhar Pillai and Taran Adarsh credit the film’s production for its phenomenal success.
Sreedhar Pillai said, “People are loving the film. Normally, films that, let’s say, are Pakistan-bashing—and above all, the South market is completely different. Here, the stardom of Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, and especially Akshaye Khanna has made it a huge hit. It is more because of the content than the controversies surrounding the film. Of course, controversies will fuel their own box office.”
Taran Adarsh added, “Ultimately, the content speaks. Nothing matters. No negative talk. No controversies. Nothing matters that can bring your film to the limelight.”
About Dhurandhar 2
After the massive success of the first part at the box office, there are high hopes for Dhurandhar 2, which is set to clash with Southern superstar Yash’s Toxic.
Sreedhar Pillai says, “Now that the Dhurandhar brand is established, the second part was supposed to release very well on March 19. But there is a lot of opposition to Toxic. I still think Dhurandhar will succeed.”
Taran Adarsh agrees, “Toxic will be a tough competitor. Let’s see.”
As per a report by trade tracker SackNilk, Dhurandhar earned an estimated Rs 32 crore on December 12, taking its total collection to Rs 239 crore.
