Maareesan is a new Tamil film that brings together two strong actors — Fahadh Faasil and Vadivelu. Directed by Sudheesh Sankar, the movie is a mix of comedy and thriller. It tells the story of a thief named Dayalan who meets an elderly man, Velayudham, who has Alzheimer’s. At first, Dayalan plans to take advantage of him, but as they go on a journey together, things start to change.
The first half of the film is very engaging. It’s filled with funny moments, sweet emotions, and light-hearted scenes that make you connect with both characters. Dayalan is clever and full of tricks, while Velayudham is forgetful and adorable in his own way. Their bond grows slowly, and we see both empathy and manipulation between them. The twist in the middle of the film is surprising and makes the story even more interesting.
What’s special about Maareesan is how it handles a serious crime without showing anything disturbing. Instead of shocking the audience, it gently makes you feel the weight of the situation. That’s something most films don’t do these days. The makers deserve credit for this thoughtful approach. Also, the music by Yuvan Shankar Raja and the beautiful visuals add a lot to the film’s mood.
However, the second half of the film doesn’t match the charm of the first. It becomes a bit predictable and starts following a more typical pattern. The fun and freshness begin to fade, and the serious turn in the story may not work for everyone. Some parts feel like they’ve been done before, and the final message might feel confusing or not strong enough.
Still, Maareesan is a film that stands out because of the performances. Vadivelu makes you laugh and even cry — a rare mix. Fahadh slips into his role so well that you forget he’s acting. Despite its flaws, the film has heart. If you’re looking for something different, with a good mix of humour and emotion, it’s definitely worth a watch.
