Bison: Kaalamaadan, a sports drama inspired by Kabaddi player Manathi Ganesan, is hitting the theaters on October 17. The makers released the trailer of the much-awaited ‘Bison Kaalamaadan’ on October 13. Cinematographer Mari Selvaraj directs this sports drama movie helmed by Kollywood superstar Chiyaan Vikram’s son, Dhruv Vikram. The film is set to release during Diwali.
The trailer gives a glimpse of a story set in a village in southern Tamil Nadu in 1990. The game of Kabaddi is alive in the hearts of the youth here, especially in the heart of the protagonist Kittan, played by Dhruv. However, his father (played by renowned actor Pasupathy) hates his son’s interest in the sport, as he believes it breeds violence in a town already divided by communal hatred.
The trailer hints that his path is filled with significant social challenges, power struggles, and oppression. The story is based on the life of kabaddi player Manathi Ganesan but with a fictional concept.
Bison is more than just a sports drama. It promises to be a politically charged film that will show how a young, downtrodden boy is constantly challenged by India’s harsh caste and social discrimination and how he fights for dignity and respect.
The trailer shows moments of intense energy and quiet anguish. Dhruv’s performance looks raw and charged, and the physical transformation is striking. The setting appears to be a stark, rural backdrop with symbolic elements such as a goat, which are often seen in his films.
The film stars Anupama Parameswaran in the female lead, along with Pasupathy, Ameer, Lal, Rajisha Vijayan, Azhagam Perumal, Aruvi Madhan, and Anurag Arora. Nivas K Prasanna has composed the music, and Selvaraj has penned the lyrics himself. The behind-the-scenes team includes Ezhil Arasu K on camera, Sakthi Thiru on editing, Kumar Gangappan on art direction, and Dhilip Subbarayan on action direction.
Bison Kaalamaadan is produced by Pa. Ranjith’s Neelam Studios and Applause Entertainment. The film marks the reunion of Ranjith and Selvaraj, which changed the audience’s perspective on the story after Pariyerum Perumal. Sameer Nair, Aditi Anand, and Deepak Seigal are also producing the film. Sunil Chainani, Pramod Cheruvalath, Manind Bedi and Prasoon Garg are working as co-producers on the film.
Set in a rural landscape, Bison Kaalamaadan is inspired by the real-life journey of Kabaddi player Manathi Ganesan. Mari Selvaraj says that while the story takes cues from Ganesan’s life, it is not a direct biopic. Rather, it is about the determination required to fight against adversity, both on and off the field.
Maari’s previous films include Pariyerum Perumal, Karnan, and Vaazhai. ‘Bison’ will hit the theaters on October 17, along with ‘Dude,’ starring Pradeep Ranganathan and Mamitha Baiju.
