Annapurna Basu’s upcoming film, “Sharthopor,” is a relationship drama that looks at the opposite side of a parent’s relationship. The trailer of the film, released on Thursday, gives a glimpse of the story of a brother and sister who get into trouble over the sale of their parents’ property by the male heir. Bengali film Sharthopor will hit theaters on October 21.
“Sharthopor” trailer is a deep and emotional family drama that tells the story of a brother-sister relationship. The core of the story revolves around Aparna and Saurav’s heartwarming brother-sister bond that is severely challenged by family feuds. This conflict is perhaps the source of the “betrayal” and “selfishness” hinted at in the review. In the trailer, we see how even the smallest things can create distance between them. In the film, each character has their own story and emotions, which adds depth to the story.
The trailer and a significant portion of the film seem to be a courtroom drama. The iconic father-daughter duo, Ranjit Mallick and Koel Mallick, are reuniting on screen, but in a unique setting, they are playing the roles of a lawyer and a client instead of family members. Ranjit Mallick (as Advocate G.K Laha) plays the lead. Koel Mallick (as Aparna Ghoshal), Kaushik Sen, Anirban Chakrabarti, and Indrajit Chakravarty also play important roles.
Conflicts between siblings take a heavy emotional toll on both, with off-court affairs threatening to take a more serious turn than those related to it.
Koel’s performance as the younger sister is heartwarming. The trailer features flashback shots of Aparna’s child and married daughter, where the expressions of love, care, and nurturing of her parents and elder brother are evident. She supports the unspoken connection every married woman has with her ancestral home and its symbolic connection to childhood and a carefree life.
Her emotions clearly express her helplessness when she has no other option but to take her brother, whom she loves dearly, to court so that she can retain his rightful home. The significance of Sharthopor is how it examines the traditional, idealistic sibling relationship from the perspective of inheritance and ownership rights of parental property.
Reunited on screen in “Sharthopor” after “Saat Pake Bandha” in 2009
Koel Mallick, at the promotion of the Sharthopor movie, said, “Dad and I are both thrilled and eagerly waiting.” Interestingly, this time we are not playing the role of father and daughter. He is GK Laha, a righteous lawyer, and I am Aparna Ghoshal, fighting a property case against my brother.
Ranjit Mallick also said, “Koel often says that I am his toughest critic.” There have been times when I have told her that some of the performances could have been better, but she is amazing in ‘Sharthopor.’ Her acting, body language, and handling of emotional scenes are truly commendable. Not only as a father but also as a seasoned artist, she handled the role with maturity and avoided overdoing it even in scenes that might have forced her to do so.
