Devi Chowdhurani is an upcoming Bengali-language historical action-adventure film directed by National Award-winning director Shubhrajit Mitra. The film is a major cinematic event in Bengali, hailed as a “magnum opus,” and is aiming to become a “commercial classic.” It is notable for being the first official Indo-UK co-production in Indian cinema.
‘Devi Chowdhurani’ Based on Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s classic novel of the same name and other historical records, the film tells the story of a common villager in the 18th century who rises from a commoner to a fearsome bandit queen and revolutionary leader against the British East India Company. The film is scheduled to release in theaters on September 26, 2025, coinciding with the Durga Puja festival.
Acting and Character: Srabanti Chatterjee as Prafullamukhi / Devi Chowdhurani and Prosenjit Chatterjee as Bhavani Charan Pathak, who is a revolutionary and Devi Chowdhurani’s mentor.
Also starring are Sabyasachi Chakrabarty as Haraballabh Ray, Arjun Chakrabarty as Rangaraj, Bibriti Chatterjee as Nishi, Darshana Banik as Sagar, Kinjal Nanda as Brojeswar, and Alexx O’Nell as Captain Munroe.
The film is set against the backdrop of the Sannyasi-Fakir Revolt of 1770 and the Great Bengal Famine. It narrates the journey of Prafulla, a young woman who is abandoned by her in-laws. She is taken in by Bhavani Charan Pathak, the leader of a group of rebel Sannyasis, who trains her in various subjects, including warfare and intellectual pursuits. She transforms into Devi Chowdhurani, who fights for justice and leads an armed resistance against the British. The film is described as a story of rebellion, justice, and the forgotten heroes of India’s freedom struggle.
Produced by Aparna Dasgupta and Aniruddha Dasgupta of ADited Motion Pictures (India/USA) and Soumyajit Majumdar of LOK Arts Collective (India/UK), this extraordinary film is based on the iconic novel by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, which has received official Indo-UK co-production status from both governments, with the support of India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, NFDC, Film Facilitation Office, and Invest India.
The film’s music was composed by Pandit Vikram Ghosh. The first song, “Durgamo Giri Kantar Moru,” is a patriotic tune that blends Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s “Vande Mataram” with verses by Kazi Nazrul Islam. It features vocals by Iman Chakraborty, Timir Biswas, Durnibar Saha, Ujjaini Mukherjee, and Vikram Ghosh. The film is said to be one of the most expensive Bengali films ever made, on a budget of 25 crores.
“Devi Chowdhurani” is scheduled to release in a major theater on September 26, 2025, coinciding with the vibrant celebrations of Bengal’s most iconic cultural festival, Durga Puja.
