HBO is going back to Westeros again with a new show called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. It’s another story from George R.R. Martin’s world, but this time, it’s smaller and more personal than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon. The show follows a young knight named Ser Duncan the Tall, or “Dunk,” and his squire, a boy called Egg. Together, they travel across Westeros, meeting lords, peasants, and a few Targaryens along the way. The story takes place about a hundred years before Game of Thrones, when the Targaryens still sit on the Iron Throne but the dragons are already gone.
Unlike the earlier shows, this one isn’t about big wars or politics. It’s about the everyday life of knights and common people. The makers say it will feel “close and gritty,” full of mud, armor, and the rough life of medieval times. There will still be humor and heart, though—it’s not as dark or heavy as House of the Dragon. George R.R. Martin himself said it has a “different tone,” and the trailer even includes a few jokes. The focus is more on friendship, courage, and what it means to be a true knight.
The series stars Peter Claffey as Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg. Fans might not recognize many of the other names, but the cast includes Finn Bennett, Bertie Carvel, Daniel Ings, and a few others who play members of the Targaryen family. The story starts when Dunk, who used to serve another knight, decides to take part in a tournament at Ashford Meadow. Along the way, he meets Egg, a bald, curious boy who becomes his squire—and who, as readers of the books know, is secretly a Targaryen prince.
Each episode will only be about thirty minutes long, which is much shorter than the other Westeros shows. There are six episodes in total, starting on January 18, 2026, on HBO and Max, and ending in late February. In India, the series will stream on JioHotstar. Martin and Ira Parker, who worked on House of the Dragon, are writing and producing the show together. They’ve said the goal is to make it feel more grounded, with fewer castles and dragons and more focus on people trying to survive and do the right thing.
Overall, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms sounds like a smaller, warmer story set in the same cold world we know from Game of Thrones. It’s about loyalty, friendship, and the simple dream of being a good knight in a hard world. It may not have epic battles or dragons, but it could remind viewers why they first fell in love with Westeros—its people, its struggles, and its stories of courage.
