Actor Yami Gautam has spoken up about being called a “nationalist actor” because of her recent film choices. During the trailer launch of her new film Haq, Yami was asked about this label. She laughed it off, saying she didn’t even know that people had tagged her that way. She added that people keep coming up with different labels all the time and she doesn’t take them seriously. For her, what matters most is doing good work and telling stories that connect with people.
Yami explained that every story she chooses has its own importance and message. She said that through films, she wants to reach all kinds of audiences — from big cities to small towns. According to her, the goal is to tell stories that are meaningful yet entertaining. She also said she respects all opinions, but her true focus is on her audience. “They’ve never called me anything like that,” she said, adding that she works for them and values their love the most.
Her upcoming film Haq is inspired by the famous 1985 Shah Bano case, which sparked nationwide conversations about women’s rights and equality. The movie stars Yami alongside Emraan Hashmi and shows the struggles of a woman who stands up for justice after being wronged by her husband. The story follows her fight for dignity and fair treatment under the law, despite facing resistance from her own community.
The trailer gives a glimpse of a powerful courtroom drama filled with emotion and strong performances. Emraan plays Abbas, Yami’s husband, who divorces her and refuses to support her financially. Yami’s character, Shah Bano, refuses to stay silent and decides to take him to court, fighting not only him but also the social norms that try to silence her. The film’s theme revolves around courage, faith, and the fight for equal rights.
Haq is directed by Suparn S. Varma and also stars Sheeba Chaddha and Vartika Singh. It will hit theatres on November 7. The film promises a mix of emotion, drama, and thought-provoking moments. With Yami Gautam’s calm response to the “nationalist” label and her strong role in Haq, she once again shows that she prefers to let her work speak for itself.
